What Is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha) is a condition in Vedic astrology where Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart. These six houses govern the self, family, happiness, marriage, longevity, and expenditure — areas where Mars's aggressive energy can create friction, particularly in relationships and marriage.
Roughly 40–50% of people have some form of Mangal Dosha, so it is far more common than popular fear suggests. The severity varies significantly depending on which house Mars occupies and whether cancellation conditions (Pariharas) apply.
How AstroAsk Detects It
AstroAsk generates a highly precise Rasi chart, then meticulously verifies Mars's house position against the classical framework (houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12). Importantly, the analysis also tracks multiple layers of cancellation yoga logic:
- Jupiter aspects Mars: Jupiter's benefic aspect (5th, 7th, or 9th from its position) neutralizes Mars's harshness.
- Venus in 1st or 7th house: Venus's presence in angular houses softens relationship difficulties.
- Mars in own sign or exalted: Mars in Aries, Scorpio (own), or Capricorn (exalted) is dignified enough to manage its energy constructively.
- Mars in Kendra from Jupiter: A Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) relationship between Mars and Jupiter provides structural support.
Reading the Output
The result shows a clear hasMangalDosha boolean, the exact house and sign Mars occupies, and a list of any applicable cancellation yogas. If cancellations are present, the Dosha's practical impact is significantly reduced. Astrologers typically consider a "cancelled" Mangal Dosha as largely benign for marriage compatibility.
