    How It Works

Calculate your Ashtottari Dasha periods — a 108-year alternative Vedic timing system active when Rahu occupies specific positions, revealing life themes Vimshottari may not surface.

    Computation Engine

Ashtottari is computed when Rahu occupies a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or Trikona (5th, 9th) house from the Lagna or Moon in your chart. The 8-planet sequence (Sun through Saturn plus Rahu) totals 108 years, with each planet governing distinct period lengths different from Vimshottari.

    Interpretive Lens

Ashtottari often highlights themes that Vimshottari overlooks — particularly Rahu-driven obsessions, sudden rises, and unconventional paths to success. It is used alongside Vimshottari as a confirmatory timing system.

When Ashtottari Dasha applies to a chart

Unlike Vimshottari, which is applied to every chart, Ashtottari is conditional. The most widely followed rule comes from Parashara: the system applies when Rahu occupies a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or a Trikona (5th, 9th) from the lord of the Lagna, in a chart born during the Krishna Paksha of a day birth or the Shukla Paksha of a night birth.

In practice, schools differ. Some measure Rahu's position from the Lagna itself rather than the Lagna lord; others drop the Paksha condition entirely and apply the system to any chart with a strongly placed Rahu. This calculator reports whether the classical condition is met so you can judge for yourself, rather than silently picking one school.

This conditionality is the point rather than a flaw. Ashtottari was designed as a Rahu-sensitive system, so it is applied to exactly the charts where Rahu is positioned to dominate the life narrative — and skipped where it would add noise.

    How Ashtottari differs from Vimshottari

Three structural differences matter. The cycle is 108 years rather than 120. It uses 8 planets rather than 9 — Ketu is excluded entirely, while Rahu is retained with a 12-year period. And the period lengths themselves are completely different: Venus rules 21 years here against 20 in Vimshottari, Jupiter 19 against 16, Mercury 17 against 17, and the Sun just 6 against Vimshottari's 6.

The running order also changes. Ashtottari runs Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu, Venus — note Saturn arriving before Jupiter, which reverses their Vimshottari sequence. Two people in the same Vimshottari Mahadasha can therefore be in entirely different Ashtottari periods.

Because Ketu is absent, Ashtottari has no equivalent of the Ketu Mahadasha that Vimshottari readers often associate with detachment and loss. For charts where Rahu dominates, practitioners argue this produces a cleaner timing signal.

    Reading both systems together

Use Vimshottari as the primary and Ashtottari as the confirmation. Where both systems activate the same planet at the same time, the event tends to be pronounced and clearly dated — that convergence is the single most useful thing this calculator surfaces.

Where they disagree, treat the period as genuinely mixed rather than picking a winner. A Jupiter Vimshottari period running against a Saturn Ashtottari period usually reads as growth achieved through obstruction, not as one system being wrong.

Ashtottari is most informative for the events Vimshottari tends to under-call: sudden elevations, foreign connections, unconventional careers, and the reversals that trace back to a strong Rahu. If your Vimshottari timeline has never quite matched your life's turning points, this is the system worth checking.

    Frequently asked questions

When does Ashtottari Dasha apply to my chart?+

Ashtottari is applicable when Rahu is in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or Trikona (5th, 9th) house from the Ascendant or Moon, as per classical conditions laid out in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra.

How does it differ from Vimshottari?+

Vimshottari uses 9 planets in a fixed sequence totaling 120 years. Ashtottari uses 8 planets (including Rahu, excluding Ketu) totaling 108 years, with each planet's period length differing significantly from Vimshottari.

Which is more accurate — Vimshottari or Ashtottari?+

Neither is universally 'better.' Vimshottari is the standard and works for most charts. Ashtottari is applied conditionally and acts as a powerful second opinion — when both systems agree on timing, the prediction carries much higher confidence.
