What is a Nakshatra?+
A Nakshatra is one of 27 (or 28) Lunar Mansions in Vedic astrology — a 13°20' segment of the sky through which the Moon travels approximately every 24 hours. Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet, deity, symbol, and set of qualities that deeply shape the personality of those born with their Moon there.
Why is Nakshatra more specific than Moon sign?+
Each zodiac sign contains 2.25 Nakshatras. So while Moon sign groups people by 30° of the zodiac (about 1/12 of all charts), your Nakshatra narrows it to 13°20' — three times more specific. The pada narrows it further to 3°20'. This precision allows much more nuanced psychological and predictive analysis.
What is a Nakshatra pada?+
Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20' each, corresponding to the 4 Navamsa signs within it. The pada shows which dimension of the Nakshatra's energy is most prominent and contributes to your Navamsa (D9) chart placement.
